Warning about identity theft scams

Updated this week

In recent weeks and months, the number of Bitcoin fraud attempts has risen sharply again. In this article, you can find out why we at Coinfinity are unfortunately also affected by this and how you can protect yourself from such scams.

In this article, we would like to draw your attention to current scams using examples. We would also like to raise your awareness of how important it is to protect your data carefully and not to share it with third parties.

Current scams

Fraudsters are increasingly posing as employees of companies such as Coinfinity and sending messages to their victims via email, text message, Facebook, WhatsApp, and other messaging services.

The fraudsters often promise high profits or pretend there is a problem that can only be solved by sending Bitcoin to another address, for example. In other cases, they pretend that a bank transfer to a supposed Coinfinity IBAN is necessary in order to receive a Bitcoin payout.

Clarifications

Coinfinity will never contact you via Facebook, WhatsApp, or other messaging services to discuss matters relating to your account. We only contact our customers via live chat in our app or online portal, or via the email addresses support@coinfinity.co and sales@coinfinity.co. It is possible to request a callback from Coinfinity, but this callback will always be made using the following phone number: +43 316 711 744.

If someone contacts you via WhatsApp or Facebook, for example, and claims to be a Coinfinity employee, it is most likely a scam!

Coinfinity will never ask you to enter personal information or Bitcoin addresses anywhere indiscriminately. Coinfinity will also never ask you to transfer your Bitcoin to another wallet for security reasons or to send money to an unknown IBAN. If you have requested assistance with buying or selling Bitcoin, or need help with registration or verification, this support will only be provided via our live chat or by email from support@coinfinity.co and sales@coinfinity.co. We will only contact you by phone at your request.

If someone asks you for your data (especially bank details, credit card details, or Bitcoin addresses) or asks you to install a program such as AnyDesk, it is most likely a scam!

Coinfinity is a company based in Austria. We currently have no other branches or offices in other countries.

If someone claims to be calling from the Coinfinity branch in London or Berlin, for example, it is most likely a scam!

How to protect yourself from fraud

The best way to protect yourself against such fraud attempts is to be alert and look closely. Pay attention to the quality of the language and frequent spelling and grammar mistakes. Always question the plausibility of such messages—in most cases, the pretexts and supposed solutions offered by fraudsters make absolutely no sense!

The following elements are signs of a scam:

  • The sender's email address (e.g. coinfinitygmbh0@gmail.com) is not a real Coinfinity email address.

  • The message contains many spelling and grammar errors

  • Attempts to persuade the user to take immediate action

Always remember: if something seems too good to be true, it is a lie. For example, if someone claims that large amounts of Bitcoin are waiting for you in a wallet, even though you have invested little or nothing in Bitcoin so far, then this is an attempt at fraud.

Always be skeptical of unsolicited messages or calls and carefully check all requests concerning your Coinfinity account or your Bitcoin. If something seems suspicious, please contact our support team immediately via live chat in the app. If you have any suspicions, please get in touch with us.

If you feel uncertain or have already suffered a loss, please contact the police immediately and provide them with all information about the online fraudsters so that they can take appropriate action. Coinfinity works closely with law enforcement agencies in such cases and supports them in investigating these crimes.

Remember: if in doubt, you can always contact us—we are here for you.
